Recommended Resources

There are a number of books and websites that I have found useful in my own life and in my work with clients. Please check with your preferred book distributor to obtain the books described. I have included a brief description of the internet resources with links for each.

Books

  • The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change.  Author: Stephen R. Covey. Publisher: Simon & Schuster.  Comments:  A classic resource, rich with wisdom on achieving character and victory in private and public spheres.
  • Now, Discover Your Strengths.  Author: Marcus Buckingham & Donald O. Clifton. Publisher: The Free Press.  Comments:  An important book that establishes the importance of knowing one’s strengths and using them optimally.  Many people futilely try to turn their weaknesses into strengths, instead of managing their weaknesses and capitalizing on their existing strengths.  The book contains a code that allows the purchaser to take an on-line Strengths Finder Profile through the Gallup International Research & Education Center.
  • Learned Optimism. Author: Martin E. P. Seligman.  Publisher: Knopf.  Comments:  From the father of the Positive Psychology revolution, this resource emphasizes the power of our unexamined beliefs and assumptions on our emotional and physical health.  More than informative, this book offers concrete suggestions for developing optimism in one’s approach to life.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ.  Author: Daniel Goleman.  Publisher: Bantam Books.  Comments:  A very readable introduction into the exciting realm of emotional intelligence.  Offers insight into why traditional intelligence alone is not sufficient for success.
  • Claiming Your Place at the Fire: Living the Second Half of your Life On Purpose.  Authors:  Richard J. Leider & David A. Shapiro.  Publisher: Berrett-Koehler.  Comments:  A great read for those entering or already immersed in the second half of life.  Discusses the challenges that can be met to help us “grow whole, not old”.
  • The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment.  Author: Eckhart Tolle.  Publisher: New World Library.  Comments:  Do not let the subtitle mislead you.  Not so much a book about religion, but rather a guide on the importance of not living in the past or the future, which are illusions anyway.  The author offers very useful suggestions for learning to manage the mind, instead of allowing the mind to manage you.
  • The Power of Intention:  Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way.  Author: Wayne W. Dyer.  Publisher: Hay House.  Comments:  From one of the early lights in the human development field, this book does have strong spiritual (non-denominational) overtones about tapping into a creative force that is accessible to all.  There are very useful chapters on eliminating obstacles that prevent us from creating the lives we desire.

Internet Resources

  • The Myers & Briggs Foundation:  An on-line resource that explains the importance of personality type, and provides information on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).  The MBTI is widely used in coaching and in business domains.  http://www.myersbriggs.org/
  • The Keirsey Temperament Website:  Dr. David W. Keirsey’s website with a different take on personality.  His system bears a resemblance to the Myers-Briggs Types, but is presented differently.  One can take a free on-line temperament sorter, with basic information about one’s personal temperament based on Keirsey’s system.  http://www.keirsey.com/
  • Gallup Organization:  Familiar to most as a polling organization, Gallup also focuses on the importance of an individual’s strengths with respect to personal and professional achievement.  This link is to the Gallup Journal and Press, with information on the Strength Finders Profile.  http://www.galluppress.com/content/
  • International Coaching Federation (ICF): The premier professional coaching organization for advocacy and public education regarding the coaching profession.  http://www.coachfederation.org/ICF/
