Frequently Asked Questions
What is Life Coaching?
Life coaching is a rapidly growing profession with roots in psychology, philosophy, human development, career development, organizational development and business. Coaching is based on a co-equal partnership to help clients identify and achieve personal and professional goals, actualize dreams, manage life transitions, cope with crisis, acquire effective interpersonal skills, identify areas for personal growth, achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and so much more.
Is coaching like psychotherapy?
Coaching is not psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is based in the medical model and as such considers the client (“patient”) to be suffering from emotional illness. The goal of psychotherapy is to manage or eliminate illness. In contrast, Coaching views the client as essentially healthy and oriented toward growth, well-being, and optimal functioning.
Do you take insurance?
Since personal coaching does not treat illness, personal coaching is not billed to insurance. Insurance companies require a “diagnosis” to reimburse for services. Coaching is focused on promoting growth, achievement, and optimal functioning, and is “diagnosis-free”!
How long does coaching last?
Coaching services are based entirely upon the client’s agenda and goals. It can therefore be as brief or as long as is desired. Most clients will typically contract for an initial month of coaching sessions, with the first session used to establish the agenda and goals of coaching. Some clients will choose to continue with coaching to achieve on-going growth and progress. Other clients will seek coaching services on an “as-needed” basis.
